Participated as a project member in “Odori-Dawns-Dance” which was newly started by Sioned Huws in 2015. I would like you to read the outline of the project in the words of Sioned from the link above.
I write my personal story here. I’ve been working with Sioned Huws since 2008 (“Aomori Project”), so I thought I can understand her thoughts and feelings. However, it was an illusion, and I realized through this project that I and she are human beings, and that they have different feelings and reactions. In the “Aomori Project” I’ve been devoted to becoming part of her work as a dancer, but in “Odori-Dawns-Dance” I was asked what a human being named Reina Kimura would do, and myself. I think it was a good opportunity for me to get to know myself. I spent a lot of time at “Odori-Dawns-Dance”, looking and feeling about Sioned’s interests and herself up close, exploring my own ways and ways to get involved. I was able to stay for about 83 days in 3 years, house in Sumita Town, Kesen-gun, Iwate Prefecture, where Sioned lived, and learn the Gyozan-ryu Yamaguchi-ha Kakinaizawa Shi-Shi Odori. It was a very precious and honorable time. Aomori City, where I was born and raised, is classified in the same Tohoku region as Sumita Town, but I felt that the dialect, culture and climate were different. Tohoku is large. The more I learned Shi-Shi Odori (deer dance) seriously, I was worried about that ‘Am I allowed to dance Shi-Shi Odori ?’ I’m a woman who am not living in Sumita town. Originally deer dance is dancded by a local man (oldest son). I have in my heart that a senior dancer told me, “Why are you not a man…. But, please keep dancing deer dance. ” still now. At the same time as I was wondering if I could dance Shi-Shi Odori, it was very important to learn deer dance as a living dancer and choreographer and to experience the time when I was dancing. Although I was worried for a long time, I began to think that I learn and try to understand of one form of Shi-Shi Odori as a dancer and choreographer. This how was I seriously faced deer dance, as a woman who wasn’t part of the land. I wanted to study the land, people, and Shi-Shi odori seriously and carefully a way I could.
Lastly, I danced with everyone from Kakinaizawa Shi-Shi Odori in February 2018. Someday I am looking forward to the day when I can study Kakinaizawa Shi-Shi Odori again with Sioned, Honami Shimizu, and Rie Wakabayashi who participated in this project together.
Recently I have been thinking a lot about what it means to “dance”. Kuchi-Shoga (dram beat) that I can sing always in my heart, ‘Tan Tan Tag Chigu Tan Tanko’.
Shi-Shi Odori is in me.
